2020 Free Fire Champions Cup scheduled to begin on April 9 in Jakarta, Indonesia, has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The organizer of the competition, Garena, made the announcement initially in Portuguese and Spanish. It explained epidemic had led to the cancellation, having initially postponed it from March 6.

The competition, which was to be the first tournament on Free Fire’s international calendar for 2020 was to witness the gathering of the best teams around the world.

Recall that the organizer had in January announced the two other global events scheduled for June and July alongside the return of the Free Fire World Series to Brazil planned for November this year.

With the world still battling to curtail the spread of the pandemic, it remains if other events scheduled will hold as there is no current update from Garena over them.

According to Garena, it cancelled the competition primarily over concern for the health of players, staff, and fans. It further explained that several options were put into consideration before making the announcement, noting that it is an unprecedented time for offline and online sports.

While noting that it was impossible to host an international event in presently, Garena also cancelled other regional competitions for the battle royale.

Meanwhile, the organizer has said that the outfit will continue its efforts in pushing out new content for Free Fire fans with the squad and solo online competitions ongoing in every region.

In a related development, the 2020 edition of the Arena of Valor World Cup has also been cancelled due to COVID-19.

The organizer, Tencent, in its announcement, said the decision was made to protect players and other stakeholders involved in the tournament.

According to the outfit, several options were also explored before making the decision. It said that it had to decide with a heavy heart.

The COVID-19 pandemic has halted the sporting world with several international esports events cancelled as they can’t be held online, with the connection being the issues.

Tencent also said there are plans in place to adapt to the current situation, which is described as tough.
