Valve’s Dota 2 reached an unwanted milestone on Wednesday after a recent count showed a sharp decline in the number of players in Dota 2 with a new 449,000 concurrent players, which is a record-low number and a source of deep concern for the state of Dota 2.
Dota 2 is one of Valve’s oldest games available, but despite that fact, a couple of games have popped up and beaten Dota 2’s player count record several times in recent years.
On Wednesday, a new AAA game went on an all-time peak as well as becoming the most-played game currently. The game is an AAA game, Black Myth: Wukong. Black Myth: Wukong currently has a peak 2.2 million player count compared to Dota 2’s 1.2 million.
In comparison, the last time Dota 2’s peak count was impressive was eight years ago in March 2016 with Dota2 failing to maintain or regain such a high player count since then.
The recent developments have led to the resurrection of discussions surrounding the status of Dota 2, whether it’s dying or not, has come to the fore. Meanwhile, Valve has continued to put up its best efforts to keep Dota 2 alive, and gain new players.
Most of their latest efforts have been focused on in-game-oriented updates, with unique features like Aghanim’s Shard abilities, expanded map, innate abilities, and facets.
