What you need to know about ESL One Manila from the locals!

With tickets being sold out in mere days after its announcement, ESL One Manila 2016 is easily one of the biggest eSports events in the country and one that is greatly supported by the local community. It’s going to be packed at the SM Mall Of Asia Arena(MOA) come April 23 and 24, so here are a few tips to keep in mind to make the most out of the event from people in the know.

  1. If you managed to snag a ticket to watch the action live, don’t celebrate the night before by going out. It’s going to be two days of action, and you don’t want to conk out right when matches get interesting. Get ample rest.
  2. ESL One Manila 2016 is happening on a weekend, so be sure to wake up early and avoid the traffic getting to the venue. Another benefit of getting there early is that it won’t be as hot.
  3. Remember that the venue is strict about bring food into the Arena. Avoid the hassle by leaving your bottles of water behind before you enter. There will be food and drink stalls open during the event duration for both days.
  4. Plan your food breaks in advance. If your favorite team is going for their match in 15 minutes, you will have enough time to rush to the bathrooms, but not line up for food. Try to eat a big meal when you do have your food break, because there will be lots of people lining up for grub at all times (especially during lunch time and in the afternoon).
  5. After Day 1 is done, you may want to head straight home and pass off on a nightcap. Remember, Day 2 is the Finals round, and you will want to be refreshed and energized to bring even more hype on social media
  6. If you weren’t able to secure tickets, fear not! The entire two-day mega event will be shown on TV! For Day 1, tune in to Aksyon TV41 starting at around 9AM. Aksyon TV 41 will still cover Day 2 of the event as well, but for anything beyond 9PM, tune in to TV5!
  7. If you can’t glue yourself in front of the TV, then don’t worry, we will be livestreaming the whole thing on ggnetwork.tv!

  1. Travel like a local and hop into a Jeepney to get around. These old fashioned mini-buses are how the locals get around and are often a novelty for visitors.
  2. Eat some Tapsilog for breakfast. This is a very famous Filipino breakfast and personal favorite of mine. It consists of beef jerky, garlic fried rice and fried egg. If you like it you can say ‘sarap’ which means delicious in Tagalog.
  3. If you’re tired after a day of spectating and need to refuel, head to Vikings Buffet for a feast of amazingly tasty food. There is a branch at the Mall of Asia Complex (MOA) so just a short walk from where we’ll be playing.

  1. Transport in Manila is notoriously bad so make sure you leave plenty of time to travel to MOA. Download Waze to your phone or use Waze Live to track how well traffic is moving or if there are any jams on your route. This will help you arrive on time.
  2. Rather than hail a taxi download the Grab app or Uber so you can get a driver to pick you up exactly where you are and drop you exactly where you want to go. You can use both of these apps with or without a credit card so if you’ve only got cash you’ll still be able to get your destination using these services.

If you have some spare time on either side of the event you may want to check out some of Manila as a tourist. Culture vultures can head to the historic centre and oldest district of the city, Intramuros. If you fancy a tour of the old city Bambike offer 2.5 hour tours on bamboo bikes. Close to the MOA venue is the Bay of Manila where you can stroll, look out to sea and catch some amazing sunrises and sunsets.
