Esports Weekly Update – Stories you may have missed!

Reportedly, Sporting Lisbon will announce its foray into esports this month, engaging in competitive FIFA and Portuguese League of Legends.

We take a look at ESL Cologne and how the CSGO Major is panning out.

The EU Summer Finals are making their way to Kraków, Poland, where the top four teams from the Summer Split will fight to be crowned the EU Champions.

According to an ELeague spokesperson, “The decision to replace Luminosity and SK Gaming was solely based on the violation of league rules and the agreements in place with all competing teams that were established prior to our first season.”

Marty Strenczewilk, co-founder of Splyce.gg, talks eSports, Overwatch, and Broadway

A few years ago Marty Strenczewilk had a problem; he wanted to watch Hearthstone tournaments but had a hard time finding out when they took place. So Marty began thinking of a way to solve his problem. He pitched his solution idea to a friend, recruited his wife to help, and after some convincing they entered a business competition, which they won. Not only did the competition give them the financial resources to implement their idea, it also gave them the confidence to know that this was a legitimate business venture. Marty Strenczewilk is the co-founder of Splyce.gg and I recently had the opportunity to talk with him about eSports, Overwatch, and Broadway.

Before he was co-founder of Splyce.gg, Marty Strenczewilk was an entertainer. He majored in theater and worked in the industry for ten years before making the switch to eSports. Marty sees a lot of similarities between eSports and Broadway.

ELeague teams petitioned to prevent SK from inheriting Luminosity’s playoff spot

Turner Sports and WME|IMG’s ELeague announced Wednesday both SK Gaming and Luminosity were removed from Season One due to making “roster changes that do not comply” with ELeague rules. However, according to sources close to both teams and the league, ELeague was originally only going to sanction Luminosity, and award its playoff spot to its players, who now compete under the SK Gaming banner.

This was prevented by a petition with signatures from the owners of seven participating organizations: Cloud9, Counter Logic Gaming, Echo Fox, NRG Esports, OpTic Gaming, Team Liquid, and Team SoloMid. The petition, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, says that each team “in good conscience, may not be able to compete” if ELeague were to kick out Luminosity, yet leave the spot to the players, as it violates ELeague tournament entry agreement signed by each team participating in the league and the ELeague rules.

Set your sights on Kraków for the EU Summer Finals

The team earning the Summer champions title will represent Europe at the 2016 World Championship in North America, followed by the team with the most championship points throughout the split. The third and final place will go to the winners of the EU Regional Qualifiers, scheduled for the week after finals at the EU LCS Arena. Seeding will be determined by championship points, so every game counts.

Sporting Lisbon enters League of Legends and FIFA esports

FC Schalke 04, VfL Wolfsburg, West Ham United, Besiktas Istanbul, Santos FC, Valencia CF, Saski Baskonia, and just today, Manchester City… the list of traditional sports clubs getting in touch with esports gets longer. And by the looks of it, this development is far from holding. As multiple sources confirmed, the next on the list is Sporting Clube de Portugal—also known as Sporting Lisbon—one of Portugal’s most successful soccer clubs, and the club that has nurtured talents like Ballon d’Or recipients Cristiano Ronaldo and Luís Figo.

According to multiple sources, the club has approached several teams that are fielding rosters in the Liga Portuguesa de League of Legends (LPLOL). Regarding FIFA, Sporting apparently is not only interest in signing players but also in organizing nationwide tournaments. The club, among other Portuguese clubs, is already involved in a standalone promotion tournament in PlayStation’s Liga Official.
